Suantrai This trio of John Canny (accordion), Kevin Carey (fiddle) and Terence O'Reilly (guitar and vocals) launched their first CD entitled "Suantraí" at the Ennis Trad Festival 2001. |
| Suantrai resonates with just the right mixture of refined sweetness, sensitivity and adherence to tradition while at the same time offers something unique. The warm rapport shines through as their combined, understated style glides gently over the musical terrain of East Clare, East Galway and beyond with an assured composure that will enthral listeners. With consummate ease fiddle and accordion blend in one voice anticipating each other note for note, enhanced by the unobtrusive accompaniment of either Terence O'Reilly or additionally here on the album, Geraldine Cotter (from Ennis). The strength of the aforementioned local styles was extremely influential in moulding their musicianship and provided an important milieu in the past for all three musicians. John Canny hails from Killanena, in East Clare, an area steeped in music. Growing up, there always seemd to be music in the family pub and he remembers listening to old LPs namely those of the Tulla Ceili Band. Kevin Carey began learning the fiddle at the age of fifteen and his love of the music became a passion in the early 1980's when began travelling to County Clare five nights a week. The Blacksticks pub in O'Callaghan's Mills in East Clare was another haven and became a regular learning ground for him as he absorbed the haunting fiddle playing of Martin Rochford. When it comes to accompaniment in traditional music, taste and understanding of style is paramount and self-taught guitarist, Terence O'Reilly has this in abundance. This is not surprising as he spent long periods playing with James Kelly and Paddy O'Brien and also Conor Tully. |
